The Challenge: Soft Ground and Heavy Equipment

During the wet winter months, an infrastructure consultancy required access for a 44,000 lb drilling rig and light commercial vehicles at a UK sports club. The work needed to be carried out directly across the field, which presented a real risk of ground damage.

With soft, saturated turf and limited access points, the team faced a familiar but delicate challenge: they needed to get heavy equipment to the investigation site without tearing up the surface or impacting club operations.

GroundGuards proposed a temporary twin roadway constructed using AlturnaMat, extending across the field to allow safe passage of vehicles.

To support turning movements and occasional parking, a 160 sq. ft. pad area was also constructed using the same mats.

AlturnaMat was the ideal choice for this job. Each mat is lightweight at only 86 lbs, making it easy to handle by hand without lifting equipment. Despite their low weight, they are capable of withstanding loads of up to 120 tons, providing safe and reliable access even for the 44,000 lb rig.

Installation was completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the site. The mats’ interlocking design ensured a stable surface with strong grip and no risk of movement during vehicle use.
